Storage Tips
Self-Storage Helpful Tips
Here are some tips for storing your stuff, aimed to make your storage experience efficient and stress-free:
- Store items you really need at the front of the unit. You don’t want to be digging through boxes for your cell phone charger.
- Do not store important documents (deeds, passports, insurance policies, birth certificates). Keep them with you.
- When you pack your storage unit, create a nice center aisle for easy access to all your stuff.
- Try not to place boxes directly on concrete floors. Use pallets or skids to prevent moisture absorption.
- Plastic containers tend to provide more protection from possible water or moisture damage.
- If you’re storing tables and other furniture, remove legs and store tabletops and sofas end to end, to save space.
- Be sure to wrap chairs and tabletops completely in protective quilts so that nice finishes won’t be scratched or nicked.
- Treat wood with a good polish before storing.
- Use trash cans to store shovels, hoes and rakes.
- Mattresses should be wrapped and stored flat on level surfaces.
- When storing metal items, to retard rust, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil.
- Hang blankets, draperies, and dress clothes in wardrobe boxes. Always use high quality locks on your unit. (We sell them!) Just ask the manager for a recommendation.
- To be safe, drain gasoline and oil from lawn mowers and other items with small engines.
Self-Storage Don'ts
You would think we would never have to state the obvious, but sometimes people need to be reminded.
So here are a few big self-storage don’ts:
- Never store live animals, perishables, liquids, explosives, flammables liquids and fuel, toxic materials, or other items that require a controlled environment.
- Never try to live or sleep in a storage unit
